Visit the Strand
If a picturesque and romantic evening is to your taste, then a simple walk down the Strand in Galveston’s historic district may just be your cup of tea. Many of the buildings date from the 19th century – surviving the 1900 hurricane – and are now beautifully appointed in authentic period style. The area features a wide variety of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums all within easy walking distance.
Spend a Night at the Hotel
Recently renovated, the historic Hotel Galvez boasts its own spa and the Galvez Bar and Grill. Start your weekend date in the right way with a couple’s massage. Then, head over to the hydrotherapy room or the spa meditation garden for a little relaxation. Later, enjoy the filet mignon sliders or the renowned flatbread pizzas in your room or at the onsite restaurant. The next morning, be sure to take advantage of the Sunday champagne brunch.
Stop in at Riondo’s Ristorante for Dinner
Chef Rico Caminos and his staff are firmly rooted in the “farm to fork” tradition. As many ingredients as possible – including meat, seafood and vegetables – are locally sourced. Locals often prefer the lunch specials like the fish tacos or the shrimp salad, but no diner can go wrong by trying the brodetto di crabmeat or the linguine a la vongole. Riondo’s Ristorante also hosts private parties and events directly upstairs on the second floor of the historic Sealy Building.
Enjoy a Dessert and Coffee at Lucky Star
While it is only a kiosk located in the middle of the Saengerfest Park, the Lucky Star Shaved Ice and Iced Coffee Bar offers a welcome respite for visitors out on a date on a hot summer afternoon. They have all the standard offerings – lattes, cappuccinos, espressos and the like – but the fan favorite every year seems to be the Lucky Monkey. Try it, you’re sure to like it!
Try a Nightcap at the Rooftop Bar
Located in the Tremont House Grand Hotel, this beautiful and low-key nightspot is perfect for that after-dinner drink on a romantic date. Just order your favorite cocktail – the gin and tonic is superb – and watch the sun go down or try the bar a little later to see the lights of downtown.
Ride a Segway
For those couples who want a little more excitement, the rental of a Segway in the historic district may just fit the bill. In case you are not familiar with them, Segways are a form of powered personal transport. You stand on them and ride them around like a scooter. They are incredibly agile so there is little danger of hitting pedestrians or of being struck by a car. They also allow one to travel significantly farther than just walking, so you can see more sights. Without a doubt, riding a Segway is one of the most fun things you can do on a date downtown.
