The building has an atrium which you will find filled with natural light through a skylight in the roof. The apartments have gorgeous hardwood floors in the living areas and carpet in the bedroom and they all feature beautiful, exposed brick walls.
Hurricane of 1900
The historic district suffered tremendous devastation from the September 8, 1900 hurricane which ripped a large number of cast iron cornices from buildings. Fortunately, however, enough cornices and canopies still remain to demonstrate the original character of the street.
Today, the Greek Revival buildings that remain in The Strand District are very handsome, simple four-story brick structures with brick cornices. These buildings tend to be nicely proportioned six-over-six windows with cap-molded lintels of iron or stone, and sills with end brackets. Many of the buildings retain their cast iron one-story fronts and still have their double doors.
The Strand
The Rosenberg Building was built by Henry Rosenberg, a wealthy banker and one of Galveston’s first philanthropists. At the time, The Strand District was a thriving, energetic and prosperous business district close to the major shipping channel, the wharf on Galveston Bay.
When the Rosenberg Building was built, The Strand District included the businesses of the most prominent and prosperous men in the state. In addition to being wealthy, these men held considerable political control over much of Texas.
This district was very popular during the 1970s and 1980s, too. Today, the district is being preserved due to its architectural significance. The buildings in the area span of number of different architectural styles, such as Greek Revival, Beaux Arts, Gothic, High Victorian, French and Italianate.
Currently the Strand Seaport encompasses The Strand and the adjacent harbor area. This includes popular Pier 21, where you will find restaurants, galleries, shops, apartments, lofts, condos, and museums. There is plenty of nightlife in the area as well.
The revamping of the district is largely due to the efforts of the Mitchell family, who are committed to revitalizing the district.
