The Gulf Coast of Texas is certainly a popular region to visit for Spring Break and for the summer, but places like Galveston Island don’t shut down for the winter! If anything, they keep going with events in Galveston that can’t be done anywhere else at this time of year.
A Touch of History
There’s no shortage of things to do for those with an interest in history, particularly for one of the oldest ports west of the Mississippi River.
The Texas Seaport Museum on Pier 21 offers visitors a look at what used to be called “The Ellis Island of The West,” as well as a history filled harbor tour.
If aviation is more to a visitor’s taste, the Lone Star Flight Museum offers an excellent collection of more than 40 WWII-vintage aircraft restored to working order.
Railroad fans can enjoy the Galveston Railroad Museum, one of the five largest rail museums in the country, with plenty of rolling stock to appreciate and rides on the Harborside Express most Saturdays.
All the Fish in the Sea
Being an island, there’s no shortage of marine life to be found in Galveston. There are numerous opportunities for tours of the harbor which often aim to show off dolphins playing in the waters of the Gulf.
If you just can’t resist the lure of going fishing, the Galveston Island Fishing Pier provides the place and the tackle needed for a great day of fishing.
For those who want a decidedly different experience, wait until nightfall, then grab a flashlight and try to catch some ghost crabs along the shore.
Folks who prefer to just enjoy eating fish rather than working to catch them can’t go wrong with a meal at Gaido’s, particularly the oysters, which are in season and best served during the winter.
