8 Events to Look Forward to in Galveston this Summer

 

Galveston, Texas has long been known as the place to be for culture and tradition. With a long history and a colorful past, the locals are sure to have stories to tell and secrets to discover.

Summer in Galveston is packed with things to do for everyone, from sunset cruises from the Harbor to local art and music festivals.

Visitors and residents alike are sure to have a blast. Here are some Galveston summer events to mark your calendars with this season.

 

1. Movie Nites at Saengerfest Park

Returning yet again, this ever-popular free community event is a collaborative effort by Mitchell Historic Properties and the Galveston Park Board.

Movie Nite takes place March through October and is held in Saengerfest Park. The first Saturday of each month features a movie, while the second Saturday plays host to a musical performance.

2. Music Nites at Saengerfest Park

Filling the beautiful summer evenings with the sounds of live music, Music Nite returns to popular acclaim!

An instant favorite of visitors and locals alike, this free event is held on the second Saturday evening each month, March through October.

The bands perform from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Enjoy a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants before you head to the park or get it to go and dine while you enjoy the music! Attendees are welcome to bring blankets, chairs, and refreshments for the event.

Be sure to come early as the concerts are one of the most popular events on The Strand!

 

3. Iconoclasts Artists Poetry Readings

Saengerfest Park will be featuring an Iconoclast Artist Session on July 26th. This session will feature artists drawing from different backgrounds.

The sessions serve as an opportunity for students and community members alike to gain an appreciation not only of differing forms of expression but also of differing perspectives on life.

This is an event to build and strengthen the community, as well as, the individual. Don’t miss this one-time event in Historic Galveston.

 

4. Artwalk Galveston

Brought to you by the Galveston Arts Center, Artwalk has been a tradition for more than 25 years.

Taking place every six weeks on Saturday evenings, the event brings visitors in droves to the Strand National Historic Landmark District for a bit of inspiration to explore the area.

Featuring the work of many local and non-local artists alike, Artwalk takes place at a variety of Galveston event venues including local galleries, as well as, restaurants and various retailers.

5. Sunset Cruises and Jet-boat Thrill Rides

A two-hour sunset cruise around the Galveston Harbor is a great way to end the day, perfect for couples or just for taking a break.

Guests are invited to bring snacks and refreshments along. Beer and wine are welcome. As alcohol is present, children under the age of 18 are not permitted.

For those interested in a bit more adventure, be sure to check out the Jet-Boat thrill rides also offered by Galveston Water Adventures!  Open to ages four and up, this 25-minute wild ride is the hottest thing at Pier 21! Planning ahead is best, as securing a spot can be tough during the peak tourist season.

6. Dolphin Tours

Also provided by Galveston Water Adventures and Bay Watch Dolphin Tours, these Eco-tours are a great way to view the bird and marine life found throughout the harbor.

Using specially-designed boats to ensure the most pleasant of experiences, the cruise is fun for all ages.

While seeing a dolphin is not guaranteed, each tour is usually able to spot at least a dolphin or two out for a playful swim.

7. Family Day at the Rig!

Offering a chance for families to learn about the history and science of oil exploration, the Ocean Star Offshore Oil Rig Museum will be hosting a self-guided tour through their unique venue.

Needle Through a Balloon will take place August 11th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. as well. This event will be held at the museum located at Pier 21 and is a great way to learn about oil drilling and life on a rig.  The museum is open for tours daily, as well as, for school field trips and teacher workshops.

 

8. Tremont Jazz Series

For those interested in a more refined experience, the Tremont Jazz series promises to exceed your expectations.

This series has been an incredibly popular addition to the area and is a favorite of locals and guests alike.

Located in the Tremont House, Trio Du Jour, plays classic acoustic jazz with a bit of local flavor from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings.
